Joshua 3:13, 15-16a, 17, “And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of Jordan, that the waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an heap…And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,) That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap…And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.”
As soon as the priests bearing the Ark put their feet into the overflowing waters of the Jordan River, the water stopped flowing and stood like a wall as far as twenty miles upstream, near the city of Adam (v. 16b). With each step these people took, the waters continually opened, until they stood in the middle of a now dry riverbed. There they stood until an entire nation crossed. Then the priests followed, and the river resumed its course. This was a miracle of God, just as He promised, in response to the faith of His people, and this promise was fulfilled for the good of His people and the glory of His name. Unless God’s people move forward by faith, getting their feet wet, they will not make any progress in living for Christ and growing in Him. God will not open a way unless we step out and move forward by faith in joyful, consistent, and courageous obedience to His Word. Faithfully move forward according to God’s Word and He will make a way.
